Relay38002

Relay P 2

By Michelle Murphy, Relay 38002 Co-Chair
Just like cancer, Relay 38002 for 2013 began with ominous, uncertain conditions. Thankfully, and despite the weather, activities commenced on Saturday May 4th. Our survivors were treated to a wonderful dinner donated by many local businesses and served with love by several Relay committee volunteers. They received a survivor t-shirt, limited-edition candle by Adorned Gifts, and a handmade wooden picture frame. They were honored with a roll call by Mandy Morgan from The River radio station and received a survivor medal. The survivors’ caregivers were also recognized by Mandy and presented with a sash of honor. The survivors were joined by the Pink Heals team for the opening lap of Relay38002. As the survivors finished up their lap the rains stopped, and we were blessed with a rainbow in the sky.

Once the weather broke the celebration began. All those in attendance enjoyed music, games, bounces, and wonderful food sold by the Relay teams. There were special events for the teams to participate throughout the evening. Mr. Relay was crowned; teams shared deep secrets, wore panty hose upon their heads, and had many other fun activities. Around 9:00pm we took time to support those who are fighting cancer, to honor those who have won their battle with cancer, and to remember those who were not as fortunate and lost their battle to cancer. This was done by the lighting of the luminarias, bagpipe music, and reading of the names. At midnight the shopping commenced. The Merchants of Depot Square opened till 2 am. Then, the rain came back and stayed so we had to end Relay38002 early for 2013.
Many thanks to all the teams and Arlington community for helping us to raise over $60,000.00 for The American Cancer Society, which will help make more birthdays and memories.
