construction

A year to the day after the Lakeland School Board voted on June 3, 2014 to proceed with a Capital Improvement Plan for a new middle school, they did it again.

Forced to re-group after the April 16 defeat of  a resolution to issue municipal bonds, Lakeland Superintendent presented a revised CIP request at the June 1 work session.

Memphis-based Plough Foundation has announced the awarding of a $2 million dollar challenge grant to West Tennessee Veterans Home, Inc., (WTVH) for the construction of a local state veterans home. In announcing the grant, Diane Rudner, Chair of the Plough Board Trustees, noted that veterans have special needs when it comes to receiving the long-term care and rehabilitation therapy that this skilled nursing facility will provide.

“So many of our veterans have put their lives on the line in places around the world only to come home with few options for rehabilitation and high-quality long-term care,” said Rudner. “It is our hope that this challenge will urge others in the business and philanthropic community to join with local, state and federal governments to build a facility worthy of our veterans’ sacrifices.”

Forrest Street Park

The Town of Arlington recently opened bids on an additional parking lot to be constructed on the west side of the Forrest Street property. This lot will add 36 parking spaces to the historical downtown area and new soccer fields.

wtvh-logo-HiResHolly Swogger is a woman on a mission to help vets. Since 2008 she has been part of a group working tirelessly to  build a Veterans Home in West Tennessee.

Currently, Swogger explains, the closest Veterans Home  to the Memphis metro area is located 100 miles away in Humboldt, Tennessee. That means  a Shelby, Tipton, or Fayette County vet living there would be over an hour and a half away from family and friends.

Plus, the numbers indicate that West Tennessee needs another facility, Swogger says. There are over 71,000 veterans living in the three-county area, and more could be eligible due to Tennessee ties.
