The Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department invites all seniors 55+ to the Lakeland Senior Center for a class or to look around and explore the facility for a first time visit. RSVP or advance notice is not required to attend programs at the Lakeland Senior Center, unless otherwise noted. Digital Photography 101

Thursday, June 13th from 6 – 7 p.m.

Mike Baldwin, senior Graphic Designer and Digital Photographer with International Paper in Memphis will instruct an introduction to digital cameras. Baldwin has a degree in graphic design and 43 years’ experience as a photographer and artist. The class will discuss camera settings, how and when to use each one, and why there are so many choices. Also covered: proper care and maintenance of your camera, storing your images, and formatting your memory cards. Remember to bring your camera.

 

Flower Arranging by Regis

Tuesday, June 18th from 1 – 2 p.m.
Complimentary lunch provided 12n – 1 p.m.

Regis Flowers will be providing instruction on flower arranging. Bring your favorite average-sized vase to make an arrangement. The cost for the class is $20, which includes fresh flowers. Lunch is complimentary. Please RSVP at least a week in advance to Recreation Program Coordinator Joy Cloud at 867-2717 or jcloud@lakelandtn.org.

 

Senior Center Open House and Discussion Forums

Thursdays, June 20th, July 18th, and August 15th from 2 – 3 p.m.

The Lakeland Senior Center will continue to host monthly Open House and Discussion Forums for senior residents to provide input that will shape future Senior Center programming. Lakeland Executive Coordinator Thad Jablonski and Recreation Program Coordinator Joy Cloud will be at the forums as a direct line for any comments or suggestions. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Please join us at the Lakeland Senior Center and provide us with the feedback to offer programming that will benefit and interest to you. The City appreciates comments, suggestions and ideas of residents!

 

Digital Photography 102

Thursday, June 20th from 6 – 7 p.m.

Mike Baldwin, senior Graphic Designer and Digital Photographer with International Paper in Memphis will instruct a follow-up course to Digital Photography 101. Following from Digital Photography 101 on June 13th, the second course will discuss how to get the best performance out of your camera, which settings to use, when to use a flash, and how to frame your image and plan your shots. Self-timers, tripods, filters, and special effects will also be covered. Remember to bring your camera.

 

Book Club

Wednesday, July 3rd and August 7th from 2 – 3 p.m.
(1st Wed. of each month)

Lakeland resident Jeannine Dillard hosts a monthly Book Club meeting at the Senior Center. The group will discuss thoughts and opinions on a chosen book. Film Friday

Friday, July 12th from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Secretariat is a 2010 biographical sports drama film produced and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Randall Wallace. The film chronicles the life of thoroughbred race horse Secretariat, winner of the Triple Crown in 1973. Diane Lane portrays Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery, and John Malkovich plays the trainer, Lucien Laurin.

 

Geology Class

Thursday, July 18th from 6 – 7 p.m.

Speaker Mike Baldwin will be bringing 200 rock minerals and fossils to be looked at and picked up. Baldwin will explain rock and mineral formation and how they are utilized in the world.

 

“The People of South Sudan” Presentation

Wednesday, July 24th from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.

Joyce Wiggins will be speaking on the history and the people of South Sudan in Africa. She will provide an overview and narrate a video presentation.

 

Facebook 101 Workshop

Thursday, July 25th from 6 – 9 p.m.

Ronda Kelley, owner of Helping Bee, which specializes in computer/technology instruction, will present Facebook 101. The workshop is available for seniors who do not have a Facebook page or who would like to know more about their current Facebook page. Topics to be covered include creating and editing a Facebook page, reconnecting with old friends and/or distant relatives, and how to handle friend requests and notification tools. If students are creating a new Facebook page, they may bring a digital photo or have one taken in class (please dress accordingly).  Students will need to bring their laptops that can access the internet via Wi-Fi. The Senior Center offers a limited number of laptops for interested participants on a first come or reservation basis.  This is a very basic course and steps are repeated to ensure everyone leaves with confidence.
